Hi Sedlak,
I have been using Perl on a small VMS 7.2-1 AlphaServer800 system.
Here are some of the items you want to watch out for:
UCX stack -- memory leak; get the complete set of patches from Compaq
support (about 13 patches rolled up into a single kit, kind of strange --
just a bunch of images and a "COPY.COM" procedure to move them over;
requires a reboot. (Thanks to Dan Sugalski for the pointer on this one). The
file was called PTRV50A-05_AXP7.BCK, but it's not public; you need to call
Compaq support to get this. That was a month ago; there may be a newer one
by now
DECC 6.2 -- there's an ECO kit out on this, CCAE03062.
There are a series of mandatory VMS patch kits, at the least:
DEC-AXPVMS-VMS721_DQCONFIG-V0200--4.PCSI
DEC-AXPVMS-VMS721_LAN-V0100--4.PCSI
DEC-AXPVMS-VMS721_PCSI-V0100--4.PCSI
DEC-AXPVMS-VMS721_SYS-V0500--4.PCSI
DEC-AXPVMS-VMS721_UPDATE-V0100--4.PCSI
I believe once you apply these patches, Perl 5.6.0 will build directly from
the tarball, and work fine.

Subject: Perl for VMS AXP V7.2
Hi
I'm looking for somebody who tried Perl for VMS AXP V7.2.
First I tried VMS AXP V7.1 and there was no problems
but when I went to my friend's machine with VMS V7.2 then Perl
stopped working.
Friend used configuration:
Alpha server AS4100
TCP/IP UCX version 5.0 A
System OpenVMS AXP V7.2.1
Dec C
I tried to compile perl version 5.3, 5.4, 5.5 and 5.6 but only
the latest one, perl_005_006 was compiled but not running correctly.
When I tried to test - test fails after pod2html.
When I tried to install - I've got some error messages for CORE directory
and some perl programs could run without any problem, but one part of
my program was C program - dynamically linked to perl - and this program
could not be compiled - missing headers or so.
I also tried to copy binary distributions for VMS AXP V7.1 but
these were not working.
At this time I'm reinstalling my VMS AXP to version V7.2 to give you
more precise description of this problem.
I appreciate if somebody can give me some suggestion of who tried perl
on VMS AXP V7.2 because there are no such problems with V7.1.
Best regards
