Hi,

I have updated the contents of the directory at:

    http://www.best.com/~pvhp/vms/cfgperl_6409/

the new configure.com3.gz and subconfigure.com3.gz files are drop
in replacments for the configure.com and subconfigure.com that
come with the [EMAIL PROTECTED] kit.

In this update I have eliminated most of the perl_FOO variables
with the exception of perl_cc and a new one perl_root.
The new vms_prefix variable is used throughout instead of the hardcoded
"perl_root" string (dist is _supposed_ to work with $packages other than
perl after all).
I've fixed a bug in the previous release having to do with i32size.
I did manage to sort the config.sh output so that subconfigure.com
now looks quite a lot like the tail end of the Configure Bourne shell
script and I think that will enhance its maintainability by Unix
perl hackers.

Items that I would still like to work on (time permitting):

  1) dealing with cxx and either link or cxxlink.
  2) pull subconfigure.com into configure.com and do
all test compiles as well as the compile of munchconfig
in the [perl_$version.uu] directory rather than the [.vms]
     directory.
  3) add the GOSUB myread to handle the SPAWN for editing the
config.sh after it is written and we are not on "-des" mode.

but I may not get to those items before the next release. So
is there anyone for whom the replacement configure.com and
subconfigure.com (along with necessary patches such as the descrip_mms
patch) do not work? Thanks.

Peter Prymmer
