Specifically, <http://www.crinoid.com/perl560.htmlx>

All the patches there were rolled into one.

See

<http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/vmsperl/2000-08/msg00140.html>

for my description of where things stand with 5.6.0 on VMS, where to
get the consolidated patch to 5.6.0, and where to get the Compaq PCSI
kit for 5.5.3 (if you want an easier install process). 5.6.0 has
been considered a somewhat unfinished release on many platforms, but
on VMS it's probably a bit more unfinished than elsewhere. With the
right patches, though, it actually looks pretty good. It doesn't
sound to me like you have a compelling reason to need 5.6, though, so
the 5.5 kit supported by Compaq might be less hassle all around for
you.

It only works with a patched installperl script, included in the
consolidated patch mentioned above.

I don't know what is causing the syntax error you are seeing. If you
have an SMTP service on your machine, you might consider using
MIME:Lite or Net::SMTP to send messages using Perl alone rather than
a mix of Perl and DCL, though there's nothing inherently wrong with
your approach either. I have examples using those Perl modules if
you want them.
