Yes, you're right.  I apologize for the grumpy tone of my message.
There's actually a long story behind all this, but in the end it indeed
has played out as you indicate, and I'll accept responsibility for that.

My two main points are:

1.  The patch is correct.  You have to define both _exe and exe_ext, even
though they are the same thing.

2.  All Configure variables are supposed to be documented in
Porting/Glossary, which gets copied into Config.pm's pod.  Patches to
improve those definitions -- particularly in the case of non-unix systems
-- would be welcome (though Jarkko would have to manually apply them to
the appropriate metaconfig unit).
