This returns the expected value of 3:

$ perl "-Iblib/lib" "-Iblib/arch" test.pl
1..1
ok 1
status = %X00000001   mode = 3
iosb.lo = %X00000001   modelen = 4

Now, why is "MMK TEST" different?  It's still attached to the console.

Oh well, I guess it will work as it's really intended to be used.
