That is precisely why "-Dusedevel" exists


and is relatively un(der) documented.  It is so that


people do not install a test release by accident for


production use.  sh Configure -Dusedevel when


running on Unix/POSIX/any platform that has a sh,


and @Configure "-Dusedevel" on VMS are the


ways to get around it and do a test build.  The logic of


it depends on the evenness of the PERL_VERSION.


For what it is worth I do not put any of these


perl@\d\d\d\d\d.tgz kits into production as a system


PERL_ROOT, although I am looking forward to replacing


5.6.1 with 5.8.0 on final release.
