Well, I think there are some things done a bit differently depending on which build tool you've chosen, but I confess that I switch back and forth sometimes and have never noticed a problem. But you may well have tripped over some sensitivity in the installer. Note that an unpatched 5.8.0 has trouble building extensions on VMS.
