You're right; the PIPE command allows a lot of Unixy-style stuff. But
unless you use the PIPE command you don't have it. My reply was intended to
address the functionality of DCL itself, but I certainly didn't make that
clear.

My point was that (e.g.)

$ directory >foo.bar

won't do anything useful. Brian's is that

$ pipe directory >foo.bar

DOES work. It's the opposite of the usual aphorism. In theory there's a big
difference (the functionality of DCL versus the functionality of a program
running under DCL) but in practice the difference is five characters.
