I encountered the same problem when trying to clean up an extension build created with an earlier pre-release version of 5.8.1. If you make the realclean target using the same version of Perl that you used to run the Makefile.PL, I don't think you'll see the problem. So I don't think it's really an MM problem. Whether we should stop installing miniperl is a separate question. My feeling is that should not happen in a maintenance release, perhaps ever. I will try to review the changes to installperl and see if this happened by design or by accident.
