For what it is worth: I know that Mac OS "classic" (Mac OS 7.*, 8.*, and
9.*) never
seemed to have a tcp/ip stack that had implemented ICMP packets hence
they could never get any ping like testing done on that platform.

I do not know if the situation changed with the *BSD/NeXT derived Mac OS
X.*
tcp/ip stacks.
