I haven't tried building 8.5.3-RC1 on Alpha yet.

Those of us at the bleeding edge like to feel the pain :-)
Seriously, one thing IA64 is good for right now is web serving, especially
since there are so few other applications which have been ported. (Both
Apache and WASD have been ported; I don't know about OSU.) Perl is the
logical thing to get up and running ASAP.

Thanks for the details. I've passed them on to my OpenVMS Ambassador who
will (hopefully!) be able to get an update for my system.
