The good news is that this does not appear to happen in the current
development stream ("bleadperl"), so something got fixed. The bad
news is I don't know what got fixed when. If I have any luck
narrowing down a fix, I'll let you know.

For what it might be worth: I too see the same
failure on perl 5.8.7 built with:

HP C V7.2-001 on OpenVMS IA64 V8.2-1

taking that same 5.8.7 source code and building on:

Compaq C S6.5-002 on OpenVMS Alpha V8.2

I do not see the problem.

I am using

HP C V7.1-011 on OpenVMS IA64 V8.2-1

To my knowledge we have not touched this machine in terms of installs.
It is predominantly as HP provided it to us - within the last 6 months - can't remember when exactly.

BTW, I'm having some VPN problems at the moment. If anyone replies to this (or my other postings over the weekend) with something I can do would you mind cc'ing [EMAIL PROTECTED] or I might not see it until I can get into work and sort the VPN issues out - thanks.
