This is related to Perl, as the perl modules and self tests will use GNV utilities that they can find when they are running.

There is a module build test that is failing because it is generating a tar archive using Archive::Tar that module build can not decode.

Having the current gnu tar will help diagnose this issue.

GNV 1.19 for OpenVMS Alpha 8.3.

This version is designed to work with GNV gzip and bzip2, but can also be used as a standalone utility. It installes in the GNV directory, replacing the tar image, which is normally a copy of vmstar. And Unix scripts can't use vmstar.

If you want to keep the copy of vmstar around, I would recommend renaming it to vmstar before running.

In order for GNV to be usable, in the past, I had to rename the tar image to be vmstar, and have tar be an alias to gnutar.

The install renames the existing TAR.EXE image to be OLD_TAR.EXE

If you install a new version of GNV, or remove GNV, you will need to re-install GNUTAR until GNV is updated to also load this kit.

The file jem-axpvms-gnutar-v0119--1.pcsi$compressed can be downloaded from ftp.encompasserve.ftp. It can not be selected by graphical FTP programs because it has a $ in the name.

Alternatively there is:
ftp://ftp.encompasserve.org/gnv/jem-axpvms-gnutar-v0119--1.zip

Now I can see if I still have the Module Build failures in blead.
