never mind - I made some effort to clean up symbols and process and
job logicals, did a MMK REALCLEAN, and started over, and now the build
is humming along... It does some extra work, e.g.
Making Module::Pluggable (all)
Makefile out-of-date with respect to MAKEFILE.PL,[--.LIB]CONFIG.PM,[--]CONFIG.H
Cleaning current config before rebuilding Makefile...

but that was with a zipball I'd built myself from an rsynced source
tree. So one possibility is that the official tarball is borked
somehow. I'll try that next and see what happens.
