Hi Anton,
 working with git is not strictly required, you can always go back to the 
download button and get the latest source. It's just a bit more involved.

The reason why you might get a permission denied could be that the git protocol 
port is blocked.

Try with the following

git clone https://github.com/lantiga/vmtk.git

It goes through https, you should be able to get it this way.
