Strange, I use ssh tunneling all the time, sometimes multiple VNC
sessions tunneled through the same ssh session with no problems.

I am going mainly Win2k to Solaris (for ssh and vnc) using TightVNC
(but previously stock VNC) and connecting to both tight and stock VNC
servers (on Solaris). I also connect Win2k to WinNT with no problems
(but the ssh session is going through Solaris). I have also use to
the other was, from Solaris to Linux (ssh) and forwarded the VNC
session both ways. I use cygwin with OpenSSH on the Win2k box and
OpenSSH on Solaris and Linux.

The box said: "Needs Windows 98 or better," so I bought a Macintosh.
