Before I go rummaging through source code to repackage the VNC server into a
browser-loadable ActiveX component. I figured it'd be best to check to see
if
there's a project in-progress. It would replace products like ExpertCity's
"DesktopStreaming" and Linktivity's "WebInteractive"...

Anyone working on such a beast?

Can I reduce the color depth under the normal switch restrict to 8 pixels
under connection options in the windows version of vnc, because I work with
slow router connections? I think it will be fine for many jobs to reduce it
to a 4 bit resolution (grey scaled screen) and it will be possible to work
very quick.

: I'm trying to set up a VNC connection between a linux (SuSE) pc and a

: am not able to get the current X-Server screen (0), when I try to
: start the vncserver on the linux side I automatically get the X-server
: (1) and the (0).
: Is there a solution for this problem ??

What problem? You mean that Xfree86 isn't normally a VNC server?
There are several possible ways to get the Xfree86 server
to also serve the RFB protocol for it's screen.

    x0rfbserver: http://www.hexonet.de/software/rfb/
    krfb: http://www.tjansen.de/krfb/
    vnc.so/vncfb: http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/

and maybe some more I can't find references to right now.

Or do you mean, you need Windows VNC server to act more rationally and
be capable of hosting multiple virtual desktops? You could run multiple
windows sessiosn via VMware, or buy an NT server with lots of citrix
license (but then that makes VNC moot). Some other solutions have been
rumored, but I haven't seen concrete references.

1. I have a machine with windows 2000 SP1 and VNC 3.3.3R9 with WINVNC
running. If I wqant to logon, I get the questio to the password. If I enterd
it well I get the message connection rejected. Sometimes also connection
closed. On the machine runs no shutdown process.
2. On many installations under windows 2000 I install the automatic start of
the service. After that I start the WinVNC-application and enter a 6-digit
long password and klick Apply and OK buttom. If I restart the machin I
get the message, that4s no default password is set. I enter it again, and
mostly it works now after reboot, but sometimes I have to do this 3 or more
times until the password is saved for a reboot.

Any ideas?

Subject: Window does not show up on vnc display
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am running Xvnc (latest version) on an AIX box and usually logs in from
home with linux to access the display. It works in most cases, but now and
then I experience an application which does not show up on the vnc
display, even with the DISPLAY variable set correctly, no error code comes
and the program seem to be running fine, there is just no output being
sent to the display. I have no problem sending the same application's
output to another regular physical display on a different unix box, it is
only vnc which refuses. It also won't show up if I am using the viewer on
the physical screen itself, so it is not a network issue. It appears that
it is mostly some java applications which causes problems. Heard about
this problem before? Do you know of any workarounds? I saw you had a
similar situation listed on your FAQ. Btw, I am using Java 1.3.0 Runtime
Environment, which is fairly recent I believe.

Sincerely
Klavs

Thong Nguyen actually produced one a year or so ago. Unfortunately, it is
statically linked to a vulnerable version of zlib and the source is
unavailable - so such an effort would be most welcome indeed.

And I thought you were just being polite and letting everyone know your
reply was just to advertise your program. Since I see nothing on your site
about Solaris (which the original poster is using as a server) so your
program is worthless to help solve the problem. You have announced your
program's availability before, please don't reply to every message on this
list with a advertisement for your program.

To change the colordepth in the above setup, I think you can only change it
for all vncservers at once by editing the vncserver script.

I see your use a recent RedHat distribution. It's a nice setup and it might
have it's advantages. However I prefer the setup at
http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/ for starting new vncservers in which you have
your choice on colordept and size at the time you connect. Just connect to
an other display number.

Optionally combined with the setup at http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/ to
take over the console.

Is it always the same application that never runs? Then it is the
application. I've seen some variants in this:
- Applications that need several X11 extentions that Xvnc does not handle.
The application should give a notice that it needs the extentions.
- Bad designed X11 applications that are hardcoded to display numbers :0 or
:0.0. That's not according to the X11 definition and this must be reported
as an error to the application.
- Not allowed to display. This is solved by removing the security from the
X11 server with `xhost +`. However, take care, now everyone can invoke
applications to that display, even display grabbers to grab your output. For
details see the xhost man pages.
