Do yourself a big favour Jaqui. Save yourself the headaches and give
TightVNC a try. It too is free and available for download from
http://www.tightvnc.com/. It has way less bugs than the original VNC (whose
development appears to be suspended) and therefore will be less prone to
crashing Windows, especially if you have some systems running 9x or ME.

The official version of VNC has a bug which will consume all system
resources and crash the machine if the initial connection isn't completed
fast enough. This depends a lot on your connection speed, the speed of the
machine, the resolution and number of colours of the screen.

TightVNC, which is actively being developed, includes many features that I
am sure you will like including a check box in its advanced properties to
"Query console on incoming connections". I believe this is exactly what you
are looking for. TightVNC is also completely compatible with VNC so you can
use the TightVNC server with the VNC clients if you prefer (I recommend
TightVNC all the way). It's all there and you don't have to muck around
with a registry editor.

Good luck with your project...
