Heyaz. Having answered the same question many times for
many firewalled/gateway'd users of VNC, I got motivated to put
together a little script to answer it for me. :) Have a look here:

Simply, it runs a scan to see if the IP address on your
browser's side of the connection is accepting connection on the
default VNC ports (5900+N, where N is the display number). If it
is or isn't, the script will say so. It checks the first 10
display numbers (TCP ports 5900-5909).
It's not rocket science, but I'm hoping this will be
useful to those trying to debug their VNC setup.
