You are running in 8bit mode (256 colors).
1) You can change the color mode to 16 or 32 bit: check teh manual of the video card,
you can change it
with a command.
2) If you are using cde desktop, you can allocate color to desktop or applications via
the control panel,color settings... If colors are set for application, desktop colors
are bad when the application has the focus, but your application looks good.
Changing your video driver settings is the best solution.
