Just to play devil's advocate, I mostly use Macs and have since their
beginning. Mac OS X is very much FreeBSD Unix underneath the hood and
making good progress, IMHO toward bringing the Mac-like GUI some long
needed high reliability. While I'm in the minority of Mac users thus,
I really like the ability to port Open Source Unix apps comparitely
easily for a change.

But the real reason for my post is the notion that there're not
enough programs to "choose from". It's a statement I hear a lot and
one I don't see the logic for. Most Windoze users don't choose
software - they buy Micro$hapht. Besides, how many different word
processors (-replace with software category of choice-) can you use
reasonably? The only time I find myself in need of a word processor
is when someone insists on sending me a document in some proprietary
format. I'd rather format data in other programs (page layout) or
organize data bases in something cross platform (I'm partial to
Panorama). I know there are numerous programs that have no cross
platform analogs but I believe these are mostly esoterica that people
inflict upon themselves.

While I doubt Micro$hapht owns Apple, there's no question of undue
influence. Sadly, there's no good alternative hardware to
Wintel/ApplePPC. We've abdicated architectural development to Intel
for the most part. It must have been for economic reasons because it
certainly wasn't because of technical excellence. FWIW, I'm not a big
fan of Apple's use of PowerPC architecture either.

Ah ... soapboxes can be so much fun for curmudgeonly old farts. ;-)
