This is the basic and simple explanation.

Ask your friend to start the VNC server and type in a password.

Now her computer is ready.  (If she has a some broadband router in place
then there will be some other steps to be taken)

You can run the vncviewer in your computer it will ask for the connection
details, type in the IP address of your friend, if the connection is made,
it will prompt you for the password, type in the password your friend typed
in before.

This viewing can be done using your browser and typing the IP address of
your friend and a port number like this

http://ipadress:5800

WinVNC site has lot more information on connecting, configuring and
troubleshooting.
