Thanks, Ian.  It seemed to help in that I can
now access the desktop controls, but exitting
is still a problem.  I took a snapshot of my
processes before and after the attempted exit
(http://www.doe.carleton.ca/~fma/VNC_dtsession.gif).
It looks like xstart, Xsession, and dtsession all
terminate, but dtwm does not.

Any other suggestions welcome.
