And where do you draw the line here? Do you think it is ok to jump right in on your CEO's machine anytime you wish? How about your manager?
Here is the thing. We work in IT. We support our users and the infrastructure they need to work. But in every company I have worked for, I have always been very careful to "see" nothing. I often connect into peoples machines to fix print drivers, shares, whatever. But I make it a habit to not "see" any work they have on their screen. It is none of my business; personal or otherwise. Much of the information that belongs to the company, I have no right or reason to know. It has no bearing on my job. If I tried to connect into any executive/manager machine without prior authorization from them, I would be either reprimanded or fired. Of course, I would have to get caught. But that is the other reason to keep the icon on at all times. You want to know when someone is viewing your screen. What if one of you users got a hold of your vnc login and started browsing other machines. How would you know? This exact situation happened last week to our CEO. If he didn't have the icon, we would not have known. Our network runs on DHCP. Last week, our lovely 2K server decided to reallocate an address to a second machine with expiring the first. Just so happened that it over lapped with a machine of one of our users VNC into. They run unix boxes, and use the second machine for email and the like. When they tried to connect into their second machine, they got the CEO instead. The CEO immediately called us to ask why we were trying to view his screen, and we investigated immediately. When brosing his log, we found the user entry, and the dupe address. Unless you have protections in place like TridiaVNC can provide, hiding the icon can be dangerous. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] 3 - All users have been notified of above in writing, the option for IT to monitor, without additional notice of all resources ( including screens ). This is both for resource management, and reducing risk of legal action due to inappropriate actions of the users. _______________________________________________ VNC-List mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list
