I think your original question was answered in a previous
post - there is no built-in security in the vnc stream.

However, there is a vnc variant, called zvnc, that
may be worth checking out if you want simple encryption
and compression that's a no-brainer to use. It uses
zebedee and is fully compatible with other vnc variants.

I currently use zvnc over dsl from home to work because
it's simply the fastest under my circumstances.  Any
additional security provided by the zebedee tunnel is
really just a bonus in my case, but it's probably at
least comparable to pcA, if not better...
