That's a good question, since there _are_ some big differences in what you can
do depending on whether you want to get to the machine "live" or "dead".

If you want live access, there actually are a bunch of tools for doing things -
but the quality and utility varies greatly, and it is usually hard to find
something universal.  For example, you could remote-control a Win2K PC, then
possibly adjust a range of values via WMI - but the access you have would be
somewhat restricted and the same techniques would require a bunch of additional
software installed on other operating systems.

Another approach which is less expensive is using a KVM switch which allows
remote access - but that's only appropriate for a small server farm, so I doubt
it's the scenario Graeme is trying to deal with.
