Bill, I didn't mean to imply that VNC doesn't work on ME, just that ME has serious problems. And a clean install might well work, but it usually isn't an option for commercial users.
As for not having run into problems with ME, that is a bit surprising but not inexplicable; it depends on two things, (1) what you are running on the ME box and (2) whether you have W98, and/or W2000, and/or WXP running on the same network. I'll give you a recent example. As I noted earlier, a client installed a "critical" (meaning I suppose security related) patch from Microsoft on an ME machine. This client has a small office network and they use Outlook with a shared calendar folder. Immediately after installing the patch, as soon as a calendar update arrived at the ME machine, it flooded the network by distributing thousands of copies of the same update. My users report that ME locks up about 10X as often as 98SE (and 98SE locks up often enough!). They report that the network connection dies and comes back when the machine is rebooted. There are lots of other examples. It isn't the user or the hardware, because I've dropped in 98SE in several cases as an experiment, and the problems go away. One other note, upgrades to XP actually do work as advertised, and usually fix the ME problems. (If there are ME problems, or course :) ) On Friday 11 October 2002 09:52 am, Bill Reedy wrote: > Very strange... > > I've been running VNC on ME ever since it debuted without a single hitch. > In fact, I have not found any software or OS update designed for Win9x that > does not work on ME.
