On the on-connection issue, what might be nice is for the service to trigger
some sort of an event on connection, or expose the connection state to the
operating system (this may already be present).

That's nowhere near wha you are asking for, but stubbing something out would
minimize the amount of work and the need to write custom per-platform details
into the core code; it would then be possible to do native platform scripting to
cause arbitrary events to occur, making it possible to do much more than you
even asked about after connection.
