I use XWin32 (not often since using VNC) to connect to Solaris. I agree that
if the viewer was modified to send some extra events wheel mice would work
just fine.  XWin32, set with wheel events set as "keys" rather than
"buttons", passes wheel events to the Xserver where a forward roll of the
mouse wheel send a Button4 up and down event and a backward roll sends a
Button5 up and down event.  To use this effectively I set up text
translations in my .Xdefaults file for applications that have scrolling.  An
