It sounds like the machine level password for VNC is either missing or
something other than what you expected. Since you are getting a login failure as
opposed to a server not found error, it appears that your service is running. Gain
access to the server desktop, then run the service helper utility under the same
program group as the rest of the VNC icons. If you would rather use the command line,
it is:
"C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC\winvnc.exe" -servicehelper
Make sure that the service is running when you do this or it will give you an
error. The service helper is an icon that sits in your task tray. That will allow
you to change the service level password.
If you'd rather do it by hand, just manually copy the password key from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL\WinVNC3 to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3 and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default. I have a script at www.vncscan.com
that can do it remotely, but it's not pretty yet.

Subject: VNC - does not connect if not logged in on Win2k
Hi,
I wanted to use VNC between a W2k workstation and W2k Server. It works very
well if I am logged in on both machines. If I restart the server (I assume
VNC will still be running as a service) I cannot connect to the server
anymore unless I log in there, but that is the whole purpose of having VNC,
to use it the same way as I used to use pcAnywhere for example that does not
require me to log in with Windows prior to starting remote control session.
It connects, but after the password it says VNC Authentication Failed.
Am I missing something or misunderstand something? Do I do something wrong
or miusconfigured anything?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Regards,
Vlad.
