Getting the Java login screen only means that HTTP is working, not that you can communicate to the VNC server over RFB (the VNC protocol). Connecting to port 5800 just gives you a web page that gives you the Java applet. Can you ping your home machine? Can you telnet into port 5900 of your home machine? If not, what are the errors? Have you tried a vncviewer instead of the java applet?
