Off Topic - How to create a VPN on the cheap?

Sorry for being a little off-topic, but this seemed a good place to ask.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some tips as to how to set up a reasonably secure VPN on the cheap? (Ideally to enable a server to run on one site with remote workers accessing a database via broadband connections) .
