DSl router and VNC

Hi,

Can anybody help me set a remote connection to a computer running WinXP Home edition with DSL Nortel Network modem using PPPoE protocol?
When I start VNC service it indicates two IP addresses
169.254.35.XXX and 64.229.75.XXX. I cannot ping the first one, the other pings OK but I cannot connect from remote machine.
What's the deal with 2 addresses, which one should I use, and do I need to play with the modem to enable some ports ( I don't have any manual )
