No you don't. All you need is to know the external IP that is being assigned by your ISP. This can be given a number of different ways from a phone call, e-mail, dynamic DNS, etc. Static is more convenient because you can just memorize it, but it is by no means a requirement. > Also, turn off SPI if enabled. If you know the IP without the name then great, but as long as your DNS is configured correctly it doesn't make a difference if you are using the name or IP. I assume by "attempting connection by iCMP" you mean ping, and this can be done equally well with IP or host name.
