RE: (newbie) linux bootup with vncHi CBee,

when I run `Xvnc :4 -query localhost` and then vncviewer to the machine:4

I get a grey X screen in the vncviewer but nothing on it, no login prompt.
Xvnc on the server reports that it "Got the connection from [ip]"

New reply (the previous one was without cofee ;-)

For the inetd (my favorite) configuration, the machine must run xdm (or an
other ...xm) This is best done in runlevel 5. you can test this with `Xvnc :4
-query localhost`. Then vncviewer to the machine:4. You must get a login box
in there.

Most linux distributions need to have XF86 configured for the console to be
able to run in runlevel 5. Just configure this the easy way, just get it
working, don't bother any acceleration or such. Once all is working (with a
borrowed video card) you can exchange every call to the XFree86 X-server with
`Xvnc`, the vnc X11 server.

Then you can run headless (if your bios allows you).
