        Heya. One more suggestion to add to your pile: try
the Mindterm SSH client. I use it at my work, as it allows
me to SSH from my desktop out via the corporate proxy server.
It also has SSH tunnel support, so if you can run an SSH
server anywhere on your home LAN, you can "simply" tunnel the
VNC connection. The Mindterm client is *also* written in Java,
so it'll pretty much run on anything. It's free to download
(last I checked), but not free to use for business users.

        As a very last heretical suggestion...you may want to
try GoToMyPC.com's service. It's not free either, but you sound
like their target user: someone who wants remote access but
isn't in control of the network security which makes that
difficult for good reasons.
