Hi, Sathyan,
I rarely use the viewer in anything but 8-bits. But I have a feeling
that my 8-bits is not the same as your 8-bits. My 8-bits is the
-bgr233 option, which I believe only restricts the traffic to 8-bits.
I'm not sure, but I don't think the viewer itself is capable of 8-bits
(it is a PC).
One think which I find odd is the tone of the error message. It almost
seems like that the server is not responding. You might want to telnet
to the remote host and do
ps -ef | grep Xvnc
to ensure that bigsloth:3 is actually running. It should show up as
something like "Xvnc :3". Also check ~/.vnc/bigslogh:3.log .
And just to clarify, true color means no colormap (that's a topic
in itself to read about). You can have 8-bit true color, it just
won't be very photo quality. I believe the default is true-color
for the server. I'm not sure how it is determined for the viewer,
but the default probably depends on the host machine that
runs the viewer.
In addition to checking the log file above, also try
xdpyinfo -display bigsloth:3
Good luck. I'm posting this to the mailing lists in case anyone
can provide clarifying comments.
