I've never used a "font server" (nor I've never used XDMCP, but the docs
seems clear, see my original posting of yesterday). Also I've used my
vncviewer without problems with VNC servers and CDE sessions on Solaris or
HP-UX (only in such cases I "jumped in" without dtlogin. What I can say is
that I see all fonts typefaces correctly, the keyboard mapping is OK in
the dtlogin mask, and goes amiss once I'm logged in JUST FOR WHAT I TYPE
(not for the other text !)

Indeed I am.
My standard .login has (had) xmodmap ~/.dxkeycaps

This is used to change the behaviour of the Compose, Alt and Ctrl keys.

Note that the two machines are two identical Alphas with two identical
keyboards. The only difference is that one is running 3.2 and the other
one 4.0g.

What I tried was the following.

Replace the above .login statement with
xmodmap -display $DISPLAY ~/.dxkeycaps
(I thought it might affect the wrong display and it HAD to be done)

I also wrote two scripts called "1" and "2" (since the numeric keypad is
unaffected, I can run them from the affected VNC session).

One forces xmodmap -display :1 /.dxkeycaps
The other one does a xmodmap -pk > file

I looked at the files generated (both in a console session on both Alphas,
and also in a VNC session on the new Alpha), they look sensible (there are
some little differences but none affecting the main keys ... the most
noticeable and strange is that the first line says "There are 4 KeySyms
per KeyCode" on both cases on the new Alpha, and "There are 2 KeySyms per
KeyCode" on my old one !)

Does this tell something to you ?
Should I DISPENSE with running xmodmap when I'm not on display :0 ?
