So I just tried viewonly options with vncviewer and just got a greyscreen,
but not the screen of the server.
Any idea what is going on? Of course vncserver has set the DISPLAY variable
to :6 where as the server is set to 0:0

Try using vncviewer in readonly mode.
You want to connect right? Not just take(grab) a screenshot, right?
