I noticed you said the Java client has problems... What happens with a regular client? I use a similar setup with a Linksys Router. I use to forward the ports to individual machines, then I setup a Linux server with SSH (forwarding the SSH port through the router and closing VNC ports) for more security, but it works the same way. Another thing to look at is, what happens if you take the router out of the equation? I've never seen any problems with netgear in specific, but I know Dlink routers sometimes have odd results and have caused a few port forwarding problems for other users (not all related to VNC, but a few). One last suggestion since you're talking about Routers and Dynamic IPs and you have the email sbcglobal.net, I'm going to assume ADSL service. In this case, make sure your router and network card MTU values are set to the proper 1492 value (by default it's 1500). Failing to do so will cause all kinds of data transmission errors (at least it did for me, I forgot to change one of my computers values and my connect locked up, that computer couldn't download it's email properly, etc. etc. etc.) This link here shows how to adjust it in Windows manually. http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/280/ Cheers, John Fellow SBC customer -----Original Message----- From: Chris Karabats [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2003 11:11 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Accessing VNC server through a router I am using a Netgear router and hosting on a Windows XP Pro machine. I have a dynamic IP so I use no-ip.com to forward to my computer. I have set up port forwarding on both ports 5800 and 5900. When I attempt to connect through the java client using the domain name, I get this error: network error: server name unknown: followed by my domain name. When I attempt to connect through the java client using the ip address, I get this error: network error: no rout to server: followed by my IP address. These errors occur after I enter my password, so I know that I can get data through and access my computer on that port. When I attempt to use the vnc client to connect, I get this error: TightVNC info Failed to connect to server OK I am attempting this through my work at this time. Its a wide open network, though, and all ports are open. It is a Win 2000 server. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
