Hmm, if that list of available sizes is a vital part of the implementation 
and not just a way to simplify the user interface, I suppose there must have 
been a very good reason to do it that way.

Apart from the panels in Gnome and KDE, the programs I use generally have 
normal resizable windows, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
