Just a little more information:

The unix-version is Irix64 6.5 (running on an old SGI CRAY Origin 2000)
and the VNC version is the VNC 3.3.2r2 binary distribution for Irix6.

This means that if it's correct that I need the -localhost option
(suggested by Steve Palocz), I will probably not succeed unless I get a
newer version of VNC to work on this old SGI-box. The -localhost option is
not built into the VNC 3.3.2r2 version.

Yes, you're right, this does not help.
