After using VNC very successfully to get at my office machine from home or
on the road, I'm having some problems getting it to work within my home
network. Here is a schematic of the setup, in fixed-pitch ascii:

--------------- ------------ --------- ---------- ------------

| Home Desk 1 |--+--| Firewall |---| Cable |---|Internet|---| Firewall |---|

--------------- | | + | | Modem | ---------- ------+-----

                 | | Router | --------- |
--------------- | | + | | DMZ

The home Firewall et al is a Linksys box. Ports 5900-5909 are open for all
connections. The work firewall is a Cisco router and a Linux box. My work
system is one of very few fixed IP addresses with port restrictions.
Everything else is translated. At home, internal IP addresses are fixed,
and translated through the firewall.

With server running on the work system, all home systems can access it.

At home, the two desk systems are running server. The laptop can connect to
Desk1, but not to Desk2. Sometimes Desk 1 can be accessed going outside the
firewall, using the cable modem's IP address. Then it quits working for no
reason.

I have tried all combinations of auto and fixed display numbers. At one
time the laptop could access either Desk system, but stopped working the
next day with absolutely zero changes. I have been checking the cable
modem's IP address every day just to make sure it is stable. It is.

As a cross check of the home LAN connectivity, I have shared disk drives and
printers on both desk systems. Everybody can get to everything in all
combinations. The laptop has no shared devices (and never runs server) but
can use both shared printers and access all desk system shared drives,
including those on Desk 2 where it rarely can connect to VNC server.

Things were better, but not perfect, when I had everything set to Auto
display number, and was working with only one system on each end. I found
out what happens when you loop two servers and viewers together only because
everything was working. I could do that starting at either end.

I'm open to any and all constructive advice. Please don't pick on the
Linksys. a) it is bought and paid for; b) it already has paid for itself
by returning the RoadRunner account to a single IP address; c) at one time,
everything worked perfectly with this box in place.
