Just to make sure, what happens if you use the hostname in both commands? 
For PuTTY try;
L5901  middleman:5901
(The machine might equate middleman to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) which would
be different to the firewall than 172.15.20.1.)

So the PuTTY log doesn't even show PuTTY opening the port when you try
running vncviewer?
