I expect soon to be using Xvnc and several hererogeneous-platform vncviewers to provide a shared collaboration/interaction arena for about 5 to 10 widely dispersed people. Some sites have very short ping round trips (<10ms), some moderate (about 50ms) and some quite long (>100ms (assume up to 20,000 km earth surface distance (or inversely, assume no participants on planets other than earth, but otherwise assume the worst))).
Now once upon a time, when sharing access to an Xvnc desktop, I noted that the updates of all users were slowed down to the update speeds of the slowest. Well, not quite... but adding a viewer with a long latency would visibly and significantly affect response and update speed for all viewers. I'm just starting to set things up, so I haven't re-verified this behavior with more recent VNC releases, either realvnc, nor tightvnc. But is this still the behavior of the current releases, or has it been improved? Which Xvnc version would be best for this purpose? And are there any other ways to reduce the effects, so that each participant will get the best response they can? For example, does use of a vnc reflector help (eg, http://sourceforge.net/projects/vnc-reflector/) to isolate performance issues, even in smaller groups?
