You are testing this from within the same LAN? I tried this as well with my SMC router and it didn't work. After I dug into the SMC docs a bit, I found that this (port forwarding) does not work when you try to access your external address from an internal address.
Thank you! A thousand blessings upon your pointy head! :-)
I've been lurking for weeks, and reading all the web pages and archives I could find, trying to find out why I couldn't use vnc through my router. I was SURE I had set port forwarding up correctly, and I was SURE I had the external IP address correct, but I could never start the server, then try to use the viewer and get the "can't do a loopback" message, which would have told me it was working. It never occurred to me that I couldn't do it if I was on the same lan. Could a buddy up, had him try to vnc in, and it worked like a charm from the outside, which is all I cared about. I wasted hours for nothing. :-(
But.... thanks to your providential posting, all is well! (Until next week, when my Suse Linux install CD arrives, and I go back to trying to figure out how to NOT get the grey screen in KDE)
Thank you!
(PS - I apologize for the "pointy head" -- I was just overflowing with joy and mirth at that er.... point.) :-)
