Ralph:
Hello! Congrats and best-wishes on the upcoming arrival!
I hope everything goes perfectly.
Regarding your remote-access question: you can't do it
(with VNC) without the support of your company's IT staff. Sorry.
You have to admit it'd question the integrity of your company's
IT policy if "ordinary" users could arbitrarily install VNC and
access their PC's externally. :) Also, please know that while
SSH can secure VNC traffic and improve the authentication of the
connection, it doesn't help at all with "breeching" the firewall
defenses of your company.
Which isn't to say it can't be done. But in this case,
please get their involvement ahead of time, and not their
forgiveness after the fact. With a "secure plan" in mind, their
involvement might come easier than just asking for them to
"open a hole" in the firewall. Specifically, suggest:
1. Install an Zebedee (rather than SSH) server on your Win98 PC,
and setup the port forwarding the firewall/router to allow an
connection through from your home IP address to the Win98 PC.
Note that I said Zebedee instead of SSH for two reasons:
first, SSH on Win98 can be tricky to setup, as Win98 doesn't
have real account/passwords like Win2k/XP or *nix does.
Second, SSH had a buffer overflow vulnerability announced
this week that your IT guys have probably heard about. That
both gives them a reason to say no, and makes it tricker for
you to find a server that is patched correctly.
2. Setup Zebedee on that PC using its identity and key-file
setup, and again restrict it to accept connections only from
your ISP's IP address range.
3. Setup VNC on your Win98 PC, activating the "LoopbackOnly"
registry setting. This prevents VNC from accepting connections
from just anywhere, rather than from your secure tunnel.
All said...it's about an hour of work for someone that's
done it before. I'll let you scale that time accordingly. :)
One other option: you may want to consider not using
VNC (gasp), but rather buying a subscription to www.GoToMyPC.com
for however long you'll need remote access. Your IT guys can
block that service too, of course, but that product is designed
with your situation in mind, really. I've never used GoToMyPC
myself, and I hear it can be a dog-slow connection, but in this
situation it will be easier for you to get up and running.
Good luck with this, and best wishes for the newcomer!
cheers,
Scott
