The longer answer is that it hasn't been done yet, since it currently *can't* be done. However, the new multi-user functionality of Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) could open the way to this functionality. It would require some server side code changes (probably non-trivial ones).

Hi,
first off, the last Mac OS I touched was 7.5.3 on an old PB 190c, so I am a little out of touch - please forgive my ignorance.
I am trying to find something out for a friend who is thinking about
buying a new G5, once Panther is out. In conversations, I told him about
how I use my Linux machine at home remotely and have at least two
independent sessions running as two different users (the wife likes to
have KDE, even when she sits on her windows machine). Server running is
tightvnc, standard Mandrake install. each user starts a vnc server and
picks a display number, connections are great (from the outside through
an ssh tunnel, writing this email like that right now from the office).
My friend now asked me if, once he forks out the cash for a new G5, he can have his family share the joy in a similar fashion without fighting for the keyboard or the mouse pointer. They have windows machines throughout the house, so they could all log in simultaneously. I found various references about sharing the main display on OSX (just like vncserver on windows), but nothing along the lines of multiple users running independent vnc screens simultaneously. So , even after searching the list archives here, I could not find anything and therefore ask the question: is it possible or do I misunderstand the underlying BSD core of OSX in that respect?
Also, since I have never even *seen* a machine running OSX, I would
prefer a brief explanation of Mac-relevant terms, if used. :) And yes,
the next step would, of course, be to create an account for myself on my
friend's machine so I can take part in the joy.
Thanks
Sven
