Probably your router is doing NAT and the IP of your PC is a private one....
you wont be able to connect to an external server by using "Add new client"
option
if you wanna take control of your friend's pc you should use the VNC viewer
(or java version)
and use the IP of your friend; this is ok only if your friend have a public
IP (static or dialup)
but if also your  friend is behind a router like you you can't connect.

Look at FAQs talking about VNC and NAT / Firewall to get rid of this...
