I'm attaching a mail I wrote to another who had the same problem long ago. I don't
understand why the package has not been modified since then to fix the problem. I have
not been active in the vnc forum for a long time. If you are trying to compile the
latest version and still having the same problem, could you please try to get the
problem addressed in the vnc community?

Hi,
Yes, I found out what the problem was for that as well as another problem that was
vexing me. Unfortunately, I have not had time to find a general solution. I just hard
coded the version number into vnc.def (see below).
The other problem was the original reason that I wanted to recompile xvnc. The
keyboard codes were not working when I entered xvnc into /usr/dt/config/Xservers. That
is, I wanted to, and can now successfully, conect to dtlogin with the vnc client. That
means the session can be started by multiple users with their own login id and
password just as if they were sitting at the console. But the keycodes were all wacky
in the dtgreeting popup. I needed to debug the code.
The solution to the screwy keyboard was to replace the keymap table in the source code
with the correct one.
Apparently, noone has the time or the interest to get the necessary patches together,
myself included.
So, I am sending you two files. One is an email exchange in which I passed my compile
problem solution on to Mark James and the other is a diff of the
vnc_unixsrc/Xvnc/programs/Xserver/hw/vnc/kbdptr.c before and after I modified the
keymap.
